Sameness in the Giver’s Community
Spoiler alert!! While reading “The Giver” in class, I realized that there are some disadvantages to living in a Utopia of sameness. Even though everyone is happy all of the time, they don’t know what they are missing. For example, the people (even adults) take pills everyday to prevent “stirrings”, or having the feeling of love, which I think is a big disadvantage. People in the Community also can’t see color, which makes life very bland. I know the people are happy because they have never even heard of color, but they still are missing out on things that we have in our life. The people in the Community also have the disadvantage of not being able to choose their spouse or job.
Although there are many disadvantages, there are also some advantages. For example, the people in the Community feel no pain because of all the medication that they take. Everyone in the community is also fed well, unlike in our lives, there are people everywhere starving and in poverty.
